Everyone talks about getting to Butchart Gardens when you stop in Victoria.
And to be fair — it’s absolutely worth it.
But what really stood out to us on our recent sailing aboard the Norwegian Bliss…
was how the second half of the day ended up being just as good as the main attraction.

In this Article:
The Question Most People Don’t Ask
When people book a cruise excursion, the plan is usually simple:
- Go to the attraction
- Follow the schedule
- Head back to the ship
And that works.
But here’s the better question:
What do you do after?
Because for a lot of cruise stops in Victoria, there may not be much “after.”
Some ships only arrive in the evening and leave a few hours later, which means your entire experience is compressed into a short window.
On our cruise, that wasn’t the case.
We were in port from midday until the next morning.
That changed everything.
Why Skipping the Excursion Changed the Day
Instead of booking the cruise line excursion, we did Butchart Gardens on our own earlier in the day.
That gave us two huge advantages:
- We moved at our own pace
- We controlled what happened next
By the time we finished at the gardens, we weren’t rushing to meet a bus or watching the clock.
We still had the rest of the afternoon and evening.
That’s where Victoria really opened up.
Downtown Victoria: Where the Day Gets Better
After the gardens, we Ubered back toward downtown Victoria.
And this is where the experience shifted from “great stop” to something we’ll actually remember.
We weren’t following a schedule anymore.
We were just exploring.
We found a couple local pubs, grabbed drinks, and settled in for a bit.
No rushing. No timeline.
Just enjoying being there.
And yes — this part matters.
Because it’s exactly what you miss when everything is structured around an excursion.
Because… Priorities
Let’s be honest for a second.
Part of the fun of travel isn’t just seeing the main attraction.
It’s the in-between moments.
For us, that looked like:
- Sitting down at a local pub
- Trying a couple drinks
- Taking in the atmosphere
- Slowing down after a busy day
Because… priorities.
Those are the moments that make a place feel real — not just something you checked off a list.
The Walk Back: An Underrated Highlight
Instead of grabbing another ride back, we decided to walk.
From downtown back to the cruise port, it’s roughly about a mile depending on your route.
And honestly, it was one of the best parts of the day.
The walk:
- Follows along the water
- Has great views of the harbor
- Feels easy to navigate
- Gives you a completely different perspective of the city
It also gave us a chance to slow down and actually take it all in before getting back on the ship.
No lines. No rush.
Just a really good end to the day.
Why This Stop Is More Underrated Than People Think
Victoria doesn’t always get the same attention as Alaska cruise ports do.
And honestly, part of that is because of how short many stops are.
If you’re only there for a few hours at night, your options are limited.
But if you have:
- A longer port day
- Or an overnight stay
This becomes a completely different experience.
It’s not just a quick stop anymore.
It’s a place you can actually explore.
And that’s when it becomes worth it.
What We’d Do Again
If we had this exact same stop again, we wouldn’t change much.
We would:
- Do Butchart Gardens earlier in the day
- Head back downtown
- Build in time to relax
- Stop at a couple local pubs
- Walk back to the ship
That combination — structured highlight plus unstructured exploring — is what made this day work so well.
It wasn’t just about getting to the gardens.
It was about having enough time to enjoy Victoria after the gardens, too.
Final Thought
This day ended up being one of the best examples of how we like to travel.
Not just doing what’s offered.
Not just checking off the main attraction.
But creating space for the parts that aren’t planned.
Because in the end, that’s usually what you remember most.
