Cruise specialty dining sounds simple until you actually have to decide where to use the credit.
Do you go familiar? Do you pick the steakhouse? Or do you try something a little outside your comfort zone?
On our April 2026 Norwegian Bliss repositioning cruise, we finally tried Le Bistro for the first time. Since we are not foodies, a French specialty restaurant is not usually our first pick.
But with specialty dining credits to use — and four people at the table — it felt like the right time to try something different.
And yes… the guys tried escargot and steak tartare.
Very fancy. Very brave. Very much not our usual cruise dinner.

Why We Finally Tried Le Bistro
Le Bistro had been on our radar, but it was never the restaurant we rushed to book first.
On this cruise, we wanted to use our specialty dining credits for something that felt different from our usual routine.
More detail: Why Le Bistro felt different
We have sailed on Norwegian Bliss multiple times, and we tend to be pretty happy with places that feel easy, casual, and comfortable. We like a good steakhouse. We like a good bar. We like places where we do not have to pretend we know how to describe a sauce.
So Le Bistro felt a little outside our normal lane.
But that was also kind of the point.
Specialty dining credits are only valuable if you actually use them in a way that feels worthwhile. Le Bistro gave us a chance to try something quieter, more elevated, and more date-night feeling than the busier casual meals we usually enjoy onboard.
This was not a “we’re food experts and here is our sophisticated review” kind of dinner. It was more like, “We are normal cruise people who enjoy good food but do not usually order escargot.” That made the experience more fun.
Sometimes specialty dining is not just about whether the food is technically perfect. It is about whether the meal feels different enough from the rest of the cruise to justify using a credit.
The Guys Got Adventurous
Let’s talk about the part that made this meal feel very unlike us.
The guys tried escargot and steak tartare.
More detail: Why sharing made it more fun
That alone probably tells you this was not our normal cruise dinner.
We are usually more “what looks good and will not require a pronunciation lesson?” kind of people. But specialty dining is a good excuse to try something you might not normally order, especially when you’re traveling with other people and can share bites around the table.
Trying food outside your comfort zone feels easier when it’s part of a larger meal and not the entire point of the night. Nobody had to fully commit to being a fancy French dining person. Everyone could taste a few things, laugh about it, and still order something they knew they would enjoy.
That’s one of the underrated perks of cruising with a group of four. You can try more without everyone ordering the same safe thing.
The escargot and steak tartare gave the meal a little story. They were the kind of things we probably would not have ordered if it had just been one of us trying to play it safe.
Because there were four of us, the meal felt more like a tasting experience than just dinner.
The Food Was Better Than We Expected
We went in with simple expectations: we wanted the meal to feel worth the specialty dining credit.
By that standard, Le Bistro delivered.
More detail: Why the experience worked for us
Because we are not foodies, we were not looking for a life-changing French dining experience. We were looking for good food, better service, and a meal that felt different from the included dining options.
The food was really good, the service felt more elevated, and the meal felt special without feeling stuffy.
That balance matters to us.
Some specialty restaurants can feel like they are trying a little too hard, especially if you are not someone who naturally gravitates toward fine dining. But Le Bistro still felt approachable enough for us.
It was nicer than a casual included meal, but it did not feel uncomfortable. That’s probably the biggest compliment we can give it.
For us, the win was not just that the food was good. It was that the whole dinner felt like a different cruise experience. It slowed the evening down a little. It gave us something to talk about. It felt quieter, more intentional, and more like a special night out.
On a cruise ship, that can be worth a lot.
The Dessert Strategy Was the Real Win
The biggest advantage of eating at Le Bistro with four people?
Dessert math.
We were able to order all the desserts and let everyone get a taste.
More detail: Why ordering every dessert made sense
That is obviously the correct way to cruise.
Instead of everyone staring at the menu trying to make the “right” choice, we just turned it into a group tasting. Everyone got to try a little bit of everything, and nobody had to live with dessert regret.
This is one of those small things that makes specialty dining more fun with a group. You can sample more of the menu, compare what everyone liked, and make the meal feel like more of an experience.
For a restaurant like Le Bistro, where the dessert menu feels a little more elevated than the usual cruise dessert lineup, ordering all of them made the meal feel even more memorable.
It also made the specialty dining credit feel more valuable.
We were not just using a credit to eat dinner. We were using it to have a full, slower, more fun dinner experience that we probably would not have created at a more casual spot.
Was Le Bistro Worth the Specialty Dining Credit?
For us, yes — especially because we wanted one quieter, more special dinner during the cruise.
That does not mean it is the right first choice for everyone.
More detail: Why cruise dining value is personal
If you are looking for the most familiar or safest specialty dining choice, Le Bistro may not be the first place you pick. If you are not into French-inspired menus, or you know you would rather have steakhouse-style food, you may prefer using your credit somewhere else.
But if you want a dinner that feels a little different, a little more elevated, and a little more like a date-night experience, Le Bistro is absolutely worth considering.
This is where cruise value gets personal.
A specialty dining credit is not just about the menu price. It is about what kind of experience you want your cruise to have.
Sometimes the best use of a credit is the restaurant with the biggest steak or the most obvious dollar value. Sometimes the better use is the place that gives you a night that feels different from the rest of the trip.
For us, Le Bistro checked that box.
It was not our usual type of restaurant. That was actually part of why it worked.
Who Le Bistro Is Best For
Le Bistro is probably a good fit if you want a quieter, more elevated dinner that feels different from your usual cruise meal.
It may not be the best fit if you want the safest or most familiar specialty dining choice.
More detail: How we would prioritize it
Le Bistro is probably a good fit if you want:
- A quieter dinner
- A more elevated atmosphere
- A date-night feel
- A menu that feels different from the usual cruise dining options
- A chance to try something outside your comfort zone
- A specialty dining experience that feels more intentional
It may not be the best fit if you want:
- A very casual meal
- Big portions over atmosphere
- A super familiar menu
- A quick dinner before a show
- The safest possible specialty dining choice
We would not necessarily tell every first-time Norwegian cruiser to make Le Bistro their top specialty dining priority. It depends on your style.
If you only have one credit and you know you love steak, you might still lean toward Cagney’s.
But if you have multiple credits, or you are cruising with people who like to try different restaurants, Le Bistro is a strong option.
You do not have to be a foodie to enjoy it. You just have to be open to a meal that feels a little different from your usual cruise routine.
What We’d Do Differently Next Time
Not much.
Going with four people worked really well because we could try more across the table.
Next time, we would still treat Le Bistro as a slower dinner — not something to rush between activities.
More detail: Why timing matters
Sharing made the experience more fun, especially with the appetizers and desserts. It turned the meal into more of a tasting experience instead of four separate dinners.
We would also try to plan it on a night where we were not trying to squeeze too much into the evening.
On Norwegian cruises, dinner timing matters. If you are trying to work around shows, comedy, music, or other entertainment, specialty dining reservations can become part of the strategy.
For us, Le Bistro is not the kind of meal we would want to rush. It works better as a “let’s enjoy dinner tonight” kind of reservation.
That is also why getting organized early in the cruise matters. When you know the entertainment schedule and dining options, you can line up the specialty meals with the nights where they make the most sense.
Final Thought: Le Bistro Surprised Us
Le Bistro was not the specialty restaurant we expected to enjoy as much as we did.
We are not foodies. French dining is not usually our default. That is exactly why this dinner stood out.
So was Le Bistro on Norwegian Bliss worth using a specialty dining credit?
For us, yes.
Not because it was the fanciest dinner we have ever had. Because it gave us one of those cruise meals we will actually remember.
