Planning a cruise comes with a lot of decisions.
What ship should you choose?
What should you pack?
Should you book excursions or explore on your own?
But one thing we didn’t expect to become part of the entertainment was simply walking down the hallway and looking at everyone’s cabin doors.
Because once you start noticing cruise door decorations, you realize something pretty quickly.
Cruise ship doors tell you everything about a person.
And we mean everything.

Cruise Cabin Doors Are Their Own Form of Entertainment
On our recent sailing on the Norwegian Bliss, we ended up with quite a few pictures of decorated cabin doors.
Some were simple.
Some were creative.
Some were clearly planned months in advance.
And some made us stop, laugh, and wonder how much luggage space was dedicated entirely to magnets.
Once you start noticing them, you can’t stop.
And before long, you start putting them into categories.
The Overachiever Door
You’ll spot this one immediately.
Full theme.
Coordinated magnets.
Possibly lights.
This wasn’t thrown together.
This was planned.
This is the person who probably had a packing list specifically for decorations — and maybe even a backup plan.
The “We Bought This Last Night” Door
Still decorated… but you can tell it came together quickly.
Maybe a pre-made kit.
Maybe a few magnets tossed in the suitcase.
Maybe a last-minute realization that “oh… people decorate their doors.”
Effort? Yes.
Planning timeline? Questionable.
The Family Reunion Command Center
This door is doing a lot.
Names.
Cabin numbers.
Inside jokes.
Possibly a schedule.
At this point, it’s not just a door — it’s headquarters.
You don’t even need to ask if they’re traveling together. The door already told you.
The Celebration Door
Birthday.
Anniversary.
Honeymoon.
Retirement.
Whatever it is — it’s on the door.
These are the people celebrating something, and somehow they always seem to end up with extra attention, random congratulations, and maybe even a few free drinks along the way.
The Minimalist Door
Then there’s the minimalist.
Maybe one magnet.
Maybe just a name.
Maybe nothing at all.
This could mean:
- They didn’t know decorating doors was a thing
- They knew and chose not to
- They booked the cruise three days ago
Honestly… also a solid strategy.
Our Favorite Part Was Picking Favorites
At some point, we stopped just noticing the doors and started picking favorites.
Some were funny.
Some were creative.
Some were over-the-top in the best way.
And some had us saying, “Okay… this one wins.”
It became one of those small, unexpected parts of the cruise that added more to the experience than we ever would have guessed.
And Then There’s Us…
We’ll be honest.
Our door?
Not exactly winning any awards.
Which probably tells you everything you need to know about us too.
Should You Decorate Your Cruise Door?
You definitely don’t have to.
Plenty of people don’t decorate their doors at all.
But after seeing how much personality people put into it, we understand why it’s become such a popular cruise tradition.
At a minimum, it can:
- Help you find your room faster
- Make your hallway more fun
- Start conversations with other passengers
- Add a little personality to your trip
Just make sure to use magnets — most cruise cabin doors are metal, and adhesives usually aren’t allowed.
What Cruise Door Decorations Really Say About Cruising
This is one of those things you don’t think about before your trip.
But once you’re on board, you realize cruising isn’t just about:
- The ship
- The food
- The ports
It’s also about the little things people bring with them.
The traditions.
The celebrations.
The personalities.
And somehow, cruise door decorations end up being a perfect snapshot of all of it.
So… Which One Are You?
Be honest.
Are you:
- The overachiever
- The last-minute decorator
- The celebration door
- The family reunion command center
- Or the minimalist
Or something else we didn’t even cover?
We had our favorites…
Now we want to know yours.
