Some trips are planned.
This wasn’t one of them.
This was a Monday booking for a Friday flight — built around something we weren’t even sure we’d make on time.
And somehow… it turned into one of the most memorable trips we’ve taken.

Monday: “We Should Probably Do This”
Jon came across a Marriott Bonvoy Moments package for a Carrie Underwood concert in Honolulu.
It included:
- 2 nights at the Renaissance Honolulu
- 2 floor seats to the concert
- Complimentary breakfast both days
- Complimentary dinner one night
No long planning. No spreadsheet. No debate.
Just:
“Should we do this?”
…and a few minutes later, it was booked.
The Plan: No Plan (At Least Not for Melanie)
Instead of explaining anything, Jon decided to keep one detail to himself:
Where we were going.
And what we were doing.
Melanie knew we were leaving town.
That was it.
No destination.
No itinerary.
No hints.
And to her credit… she fully committed to the bit.
She went through security without checking her boarding pass.
At the gate, instead of just sitting there, Jon walked her around to different gates, letting her try to guess where we were going based on destinations and timing.
Eventually, she narrowed it down.
Honolulu was the only one that really made sense.
She said it out loud…
…but didn’t actually believe it until we boarded the plane.
And even then… she still didn’t know why.
Airport Lounge: Now Everyone Knows (Except Her)
At the airport lounge, the story somehow got even better.
We ended up talking with another couple at the bar, and at one point while Melanie stepped away, Jon told them everything:
Where we were going.
What we were doing.
The whole plan.
They loved it.
So when Melanie came back…
Now it wasn’t just Jon keeping a secret.
It was the entire group.
It turned into this running joke for the rest of the time in the lounge — everyone playing along, trying not to give anything away.
The Flight That Almost Didn’t Work
Here’s where it got real.
We had booked the flight the same day as the concert.
Which is fine… until it isn’t.
After boarding, the pilot came on and explained:
Because of the heat in Phoenix, the plane had weight restrictions.
So the plan was:
- Offload fuel
- Stop in Oakland to refuel
- Then continue to Honolulu
If everything went perfectly… we might make the concert.
Not ideal.
A few minutes later, the pilot came back on.
“Actually — we’re good. We’re flying direct.”
And just like that, the entire trip flipped back into place.
Honolulu: Still a Secret
We landed in Honolulu with plenty of time.
The hotel was great, and it was obvious pretty quickly that a lot of people were in town for the same event.
You could feel it.
Country music fans everywhere.
Groups talking about the show.
Energy building.
But somehow… we kept it quiet.
In a few conversations, we even leaned into it:
“She doesn’t know what we’re here for.”
The Walk into the Venue
One of the nicest surprises of the whole experience — the hotel had a shuttle that took us to the concert and brought us back after.
It made the whole night feel even easier.
After a quick bite, we headed over to the Blaisdell Center.
We got there early — like we always do.
Melanie still didn’t know.
Not the event.
Not the artist.
Nothing.
We walked in, scanned the tickets, made it through the gates…
…and then she saw it.
A poster.
Carrie Underwood.
That moment — right there — was the reveal.
And yeah… she was excited.
The Concert Itself
The concert was incredible.
Carrie Underwood is great no matter what — but this one felt different.
This wasn’t a typical stop on a massive tour.
It was more of a special event in Hawaii, in a much smaller venue than you’d normally see.
And with floor seats?
Even better.
We wouldn’t normally pay for floor tickets — honestly, we don’t really pay for concerts in general.
But in this kind of setup…
It was absolutely worth it.
Saturday: Slowing It Down
Saturday morning started with a relaxed breakfast at the hotel — included, which made it even better.
From there, we just enjoyed Honolulu.
We walked down to Waikiki Beach and back.
Stopped at a beach bar.
Took our time.
No schedule. No pressure.
Exactly how a quick trip like this should feel.
Pool Time and Dinner
We spent part of the afternoon back at the hotel, hanging out by the pool and just relaxing.
Saturday night was the included dinner.
The restaurant itself was very good, and the food was well done — but if we’re being honest, it was a little more eclectic than what we usually go for.
Still a great experience… just not exactly our style.
Sunday: Just Like That, It Was Over
And just like that, we were heading home.
Quick trip.
Last-minute decision.
No real plan.
But one we’ll remember.
Why This One Hit Different
We’ve seen Carrie Underwood before.
The first time was in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay.
Melanie started feeling sick partway through the show, and we had to leave early.
It got bad enough that we ended up checking out and driving home the next day.
The second time was in Minneapolis — watching from a suite.
That trip even turned into a last-minute pivot to Vegas the next day for an Aerosmith concert.
(There’s more to that story we’ll share another time.)
But this one…
This one felt different.
Maybe it was the last-minute decision.
Maybe it was the surprise.
Maybe it was how close we were to missing it entirely.
Or maybe it was just sitting there, about ten rows from the stage, thinking:
“How did we end up here?”
The Part You Actually Remember
You don’t remember the booking.
You don’t remember how many points something cost.
You remember:
- Sitting at the airport while everyone knows something you don’t
- Wondering if your flight is about to derail the entire trip
- Walking into a venue with no idea what’s about to happen
- Realizing exactly where you are, all at once
That’s what sticks.
The Bottom Line
This trip wasn’t planned.
It wasn’t optimized.
It wasn’t perfect.
But it’s one we’ll remember.
And sometimes…
That’s the whole point.
