Norwegian Cruise Line Free at Sea: What It’s Actually Worth (Real Numbers & Examples)

Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Free at Sea” offer sounds simple: pick a few perks, get more value, enjoy your cruise.

But like most things in travel, the real value depends on how you use it.

We’ve sailed Norwegian multiple times — including our recent Norwegian Bliss repositioning cruise from Los Angeles to Vancouver — and we’ve tested these perks in real life.

This is a breakdown of what Free at Sea actually includes, what it’s worth with real numbers, and when upgrading to Free at Sea Plus actually makes sense.

What “Free at Sea” Actually Includes

Free at Sea isn’t truly free — it’s built into the cruise pricing — but it can still deliver strong value if you use it intentionally.

Typical inclusions:

• Unlimited Open Bar (gratuities required)
• Specialty Dining Package
• Shore Excursion Credits
• Wi-Fi Package (typically 150 minutes)
• 3rd/4th Guest Free (select sailings)

The real value comes down to three things:

• Drinks
• Dining
• Wi-Fi

What You Actually Pay (7-Night Example)

Even with Free at Sea, you still pay gratuities:

• Unlimited Open Bar gratuities: $28.50 per person, per day
• Specialty Dining gratuities: $20 per person, per meal

For a 7-night cruise:

• Drinks gratuities: $199.50 per person
• Dining gratuities (2 meals example): ~$40 per person

Total typical cost:

~$240 per person out of pocket

What Drinks Actually Cost Without the Package

This is where Free at Sea can quickly pay for itself.

Typical onboard pricing:

• Beer: ~$10 each
• Mixed drinks: ~$15 each

Break-even example:

• 3 beers per day = $30
• 4 beers per day = $40
• 3 mixed drinks per day = $45

Over a 7-night cruise:

• 3 drinks/day = ~$210 total
• 4 drinks/day = ~$280 total

Compared to ~$199.50 in gratuities, the drink package alone can justify the cost pretty easily.

What Specialty Dining Actually Costs

Without a package, specialty dining typically runs:

• ~$40 per person (lower-end venues)
• ~$50 per person (mid-tier)
• ~$60 per person (top-tier venues)
• Plus gratuity

So a single meal can cost:

• ~$50–$75 per person all-in

With Free at Sea:

• You’re paying ~$20 in gratuities instead

That’s a savings of:

~$30–$50 per meal, per person

Real Value: When Free at Sea Is Worth It

Free at Sea works really well if you:

• Have 3–5+ drinks per day
• Plan to use at least 1–2 specialty dining meals
• Want predictable onboard spending
• Value having Wi-Fi access included

From our recent sailing:

• Regular stops at The District and Q Smokehouse added up quickly
• Specialty dining (Food Republic, Le Bistro) delivered strong value
• Wi-Fi minutes were useful early in the cruise

We easily exceeded the cost of the gratuities.

When Free at Sea Is NOT Worth It

It loses value quickly if:

• You only have 1–2 drinks per day
• You stick to included dining
• You don’t care about Wi-Fi
• You’re trying to minimize upfront cost

In those cases, you’re often better off skipping it and paying as you go.

What Is Free at Sea Plus?

Free at Sea Plus is a paid upgrade (~$49 per person per day) that enhances the base package.

For a 7-night cruise:

~$343 per person

What Free at Sea Plus Includes (With Real Value Estimates)

Free at Sea Plus typically adds:

• Premium Plus Beverage Package
• Additional specialty dining meals
• Unlimited Wi-Fi
• Extra shore excursion credits
• Bottled water, Starbucks, and minibar perks

Let’s break down what that’s actually worth.

Wi-Fi Value Comparison

Without Free at Sea Plus, unlimited Wi-Fi packages typically run:

• ~$25–$35 per day

For a 7-night cruise:

~$175–$245 value

With Free at Sea Plus:

• Unlimited Wi-Fi included

This is one of the most consistent and tangible benefits of upgrading.

Drink Upgrade Value

Premium Plus includes:

• Higher-end liquor
• Bottled water
• Starbucks

But the real question:

• Would you actually pay extra for premium alcohol?
• Are you going to Starbucks every day onboard?

If not, the incremental value is limited.

Dining Upgrade Value

Additional specialty meals:

• Value: ~$40–$60 per meal

But:

• Do you want that many specialty meals on a 7-night cruise?
• Will it crowd out shows, relaxation, or port time?

This is often partially used — not fully maximized.

Prepaid Value vs. Real Usage

Free at Sea Plus cost (7 nights):

~$343 per person

Estimated potential value:

• Wi-Fi: ~$175–$245
• Dining: ~$40–$120
• Drinks upgrade: highly variable

Total potential value:

~$215–$365+

But actual value depends heavily on usage.

When Free at Sea Plus IS Worth It

It makes sense if you:

• Want unlimited Wi-Fi from day one
• Drink premium alcohol or specialty coffee daily
• Plan multiple specialty dining nights
• Prefer a fully “all-in” experience

When We Skip Free at Sea Plus

Most of the time, we pass.

Why:

• Standard drinks are enough for us
• We don’t need daily Starbucks onboard
• We can upgrade Wi-Fi later (often cheaper)
• We prefer flexibility over prepaying

Our Bottom Line

Free at Sea:

• Often a strong value
• Easy to justify with moderate usage

Free at Sea Plus:

• Situational
• Best for heavy users or those prioritizing convenience

The key isn’t what’s included — it’s what you’ll actually use.
