MSC Cruises is one of those cruise lines that keeps showing up more often in cruise searches.
Sometimes the prices look very competitive. Sometimes the ships look impressive. Sometimes the itineraries look interesting. And sometimes the question becomes: should we be paying more attention to MSC?
For us, the answer is yes.
But with an important clarification.
We have not sailed MSC yet, so this is not a deep personal review. This article is part of our “Other Cruise Lines” section, where we are starting to build helpful, high-level guides for cruise lines we are still learning more about.
MSC may not be the first cruise line many U.S. travelers think of, especially compared with Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Princess. But MSC has a large global fleet, a growing U.S. presence, newer ships sailing from U.S. ports, and pricing that can sometimes make it worth a closer look.
That does not mean MSC is the right fit for everyone.
But it may be the right fit for some travelers.

Why MSC Cruises Is Worth Understanding
MSC is worth paying attention to because it is not a small cruise line, and it is becoming more visible for U.S. travelers.
More detail: Why MSC Keeps Showing Up In Cruise Searches
MSC Cruises is a major global cruise brand with ships sailing in many parts of the world, including the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, and other international regions.
For U.S.-based travelers, MSC has become more interesting because it continues to grow its North American presence. That matters because more ships, more departure ports, and more itinerary options can make MSC easier to compare against the cruise lines many people already know.
MSC also tends to show up in cruise searches with prices that can look very competitive.
That alone does not make it the best choice.
A lower cruise fare can still become less appealing if the ship, itinerary, included benefits, dining, service style, or onboard experience are not the right fit.
But when a cruise line is showing up with attractive pricing and newer ships, it is worth understanding before ignoring it.
MSC May Be Best For Travelers Who Are Open-Minded
MSC may be a good cruise line to consider if you are open to trying something a little different.
More detail: Why Expectations Matter With MSC
For travelers used to Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Princess, MSC may not feel exactly the same.
That can be good or bad depending on the person.
Some travelers may enjoy that MSC has more of an international feel. Some may like the ship design, pricing, itineraries, and the chance to try a different cruise experience.
Others may prefer a cruise line that feels more familiar, especially if they already know what they like.
That is why expectations matter.
MSC may be a better fit for someone who is flexible and curious than someone who wants everything to feel exactly like their favorite past cruise line.
MSC May Be Best For Value-Focused Cruisers
One of the biggest reasons many people look at MSC is price.
More detail: What To Compare Beyond The Headline Fare
MSC sailings can sometimes appear at very competitive rates compared with other mainstream cruise lines, especially on certain Caribbean or Bahamas itineraries.
That does not automatically mean MSC is cheaper after everything is included.
As with any cruise, you still need to compare the full picture:
- Cruise fare
- Taxes and port fees
- Drink packages
- Wi-Fi
- Specialty dining
- Gratuities
- Cabin type
- Itinerary
- Ship age and features
- What is included versus what costs extra
This is especially important if you are comparing MSC against cruise lines where you already understand the pricing better.
A low starting price can be appealing, but the real question is whether the total trip still feels like a good value once you add what you actually want.
For travelers who are willing to compare carefully, MSC may be worth considering.
MSC May Be Best For Travelers Who Like Newer, Larger Ships
Some MSC ships may appeal to travelers who like newer, larger, more resort-style cruise ships.
More detail: Why The Specific MSC Ship Matters
MSC has some very large and modern ships, including MSC World America, which was designed with the U.S. market in mind.
For travelers who like big ships, newer amenities, more dining choices, family-friendly spaces, entertainment, and large resort-style cruise experiences, MSC may be interesting.
That said, ship choice matters.
A newer MSC ship may offer a very different experience than an older or smaller MSC ship.
This is true on most cruise lines, but it may be especially important when researching MSC because the fleet includes different classes of ships with different features, layouts, and onboard experiences.
If we were helping someone compare MSC, we would not only ask, “Do you want to sail MSC?”
We would ask, “Which MSC ship are you looking at?”
That answer may matter a lot.
MSC May Be Best For Families Looking For A Different Option
MSC can be worth comparing for families, especially when pricing is competitive and the ship has strong family-friendly features.
More detail: Why Families May Want To Compare MSC
Some MSC ships offer water areas, kids’ clubs, entertainment, activities, casual dining, and larger-ship amenities that may appeal to families.
For families comparing Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and MSC, the decision may come down to the specific ship, departure port, itinerary, and total cost.
This is where MSC could be interesting.
If the price is significantly better, and the ship has the amenities the family wants, MSC may deserve a closer look.
But if the family already knows they want a very specific style of entertainment, activities, dining, or service, it is worth comparing carefully before booking.
MSC May Be Best For Travelers Interested In The Yacht Club Experience
One of the more interesting parts of MSC is the MSC Yacht Club.
More detail: Why Yacht Club May Change The Value Equation
The Yacht Club is MSC’s ship-within-a-ship style experience, offering a more elevated and private area within the larger ship.
That may appeal to travelers who like the idea of having access to a large cruise ship while also having a quieter, more premium retreat.
This can be an interesting middle ground.
Some travelers do not want a small luxury ship. They still want the entertainment, restaurants, casino, pools, and activity options of a larger ship.
But they also want better service, more privacy, and a more premium experience when they want to step away from the busy parts of the ship.
MSC Yacht Club may be worth researching for that type of traveler.
It will not be the cheapest way to sail MSC, but it may change the value equation for someone who wants a more elevated experience without giving up the features of a large ship.
MSC May Be Best For Travelers Who Care About Itinerary And Price More Than Brand Familiarity
MSC may appeal to travelers who care more about itinerary, timing, ship, and price than sticking with a familiar cruise line.
More detail: Why MSC May Belong In The Comparison
Some people choose cruises based on loyalty.
They know Norwegian. They know Princess. They know Royal Caribbean. They know Carnival.
There is nothing wrong with that.
But other travelers care more about the itinerary, timing, departure port, ship, and price than the name on the side of the ship.
MSC may appeal more to that second group.
If MSC has the right itinerary at the right time for the right price, it may be worth considering even if it is not the cruise line you know best.
This is especially true for travelers who are not heavily invested in one loyalty program or one cruise style.
Who MSC May Not Be Best For
MSC may not be the best fit for every traveler, especially if you want the most familiar U.S.-mainstream cruise experience possible.
More detail: When MSC May Not Be The Right Fit
MSC may not be the best choice for someone who wants a very familiar U.S.-mainstream cruise experience and does not want anything to feel different.
It may not be the best choice for someone who already has strong loyalty benefits on another cruise line and values those perks.
It may not be the best choice if the itinerary, ship, or total package is not competitive once everything is priced out.
And it may not be the best choice for travelers who are not comfortable doing a little extra research before booking.
Because MSC can feel less familiar to some U.S. travelers, expectations are important.
That does not mean MSC is bad.
It just means it should be researched carefully before booking.
What We Would Compare Before Booking MSC
If we were considering an MSC cruise, we would want to compare more than just the headline fare.
More detail: Our MSC Research Checklist
If we were considering an MSC cruise, we would look closely at:
- The specific ship
- The age and class of the ship
- The itinerary
- The departure port
- The cabin category
- Drink package pricing and inclusions
- Wi-Fi options
- Specialty dining options
- Gratuities and service charges
- Family amenities, if traveling with kids
- The MSC Yacht Club price difference, if relevant
- Recent reviews for that specific ship and itinerary
That last point matters.
We would not rely only on general opinions about MSC.
Cruise experiences can vary a lot by ship, sailing, itinerary, crew, passenger mix, and expectations.
A review of one MSC ship may not tell you enough about another MSC ship.
Our Current Take On MSC Cruises
At this point, we see MSC as a cruise line worth watching and worth comparing.
More detail: Why MSC Belongs In The Conversation
We are not ready to say MSC is one of our personal favorites because we have not sailed it yet.
But we also would not ignore it.
MSC has a large global presence, newer ships, a growing U.S. footprint, family-friendly options, competitive pricing on some sailings, and the Yacht Club experience for travelers who want something more premium.
That combination makes MSC interesting.
The key is not to book it just because the price looks good.
The key is to understand what you are getting, what is included, what costs extra, and whether the specific ship and itinerary match the kind of trip you actually want.
Final Thoughts
MSC Cruises may not be the obvious first choice for every U.S. traveler.
But that does not mean it should be overlooked.
For value-focused travelers, families, flexible cruisers, and people interested in trying something different, MSC may deserve a closer look.
For travelers who want a more premium ship-within-a-ship experience, MSC Yacht Club may also be worth comparing against suite or premium options on other cruise lines.
We still have more to learn about MSC, and we are not going to pretend we know everything about the onboard experience until we have stronger firsthand experience.
But as we continue building our cruise content and helping people compare cruise options, MSC belongs in the conversation.
Not as the automatic answer.
Not as the wrong answer.
Just as another cruise line worth understanding before making a decision.
