We’ll Always Show You the Options — Even When There’s Nothing in It for Us
Not every travel story starts with a big redemption or a flashy perk.
Sometimes, it starts with a simple phone call.
Recently, a family member reached out asking for help booking an all-inclusive trip to Punta Cana. They had been invited by another relative who already had a specific resort and room type in mind. They just wanted to make sure they were booking it the right way.
As we often do for friends and family, we said, “Sure — let’s take a look.”
And that simple request turned into a good reminder of what we are trying to build.
Because sometimes the best option is not the one that pays us. Sometimes it is not the most obvious booking path. And sometimes the best thing we can do is simply say, “Here are your choices. Here is what we would do.”
Want Help Evaluating Your Own Travel Options?
This is exactly how we approach trip planning — presenting real choices, explaining the trade-offs, and helping you decide what actually makes sense for your trip, your budget, and your comfort level.
If you want help comparing booking paths, understanding when a travel agent adds value, or deciding when booking yourself is the better play, our Trip Planning service is built around that kind of practical, no-pressure guidance.

What We Looked At
We approached this trip the same way we would approach almost any trip: with a simple checklist mindset.
There was already a resort and room type in mind. The goal was not to reinvent the trip — it was to make sure the booking path made sense.
More detail: The Options We Compared
So we compared several options:
- Booking direct with the resort
- Booking flights and hotel separately
- Airline and hotel packages through major travel portals
- Packages through Expedia
- And yes, Costco Travel
One option clearly stood out.
The Costco Travel Option Was the Clear Value Play
When we priced everything out, Costco Travel came in about $400 less than the next best option.
But the savings did not stop there.
More detail: What Made the Package Stand Out
Because they are an Executive Costco member, the package also included:
- 2% back for being an Executive member
- A nearly $300 Costco Shop Card after the trip
- Round-trip airport transportation to and from the resort
- A simple, bundled booking experience
That matters.
Because when you add it all up, a straightforward “book direct” option — or even a traditional travel-agent booking — would have cost more money while delivering fewer included benefits.
So that is what we recommended.
Even though we would receive nothing in return.
- No commission
- No referral credit
- No booking credit
Just goodwill.
And we are perfectly fine with that.
Why Not Expedia or Booking Separately?
To be clear, the Expedia option was not bad.
It would have saved money compared to booking flights directly with American Airlines and booking the hotel directly with Hyatt. For a lot of travelers, that would have felt like a win.
But once everything was considered, Costco’s package simply stacked up better.
More detail: Why the Best Option Depends on the Trip
That does not mean Costco Travel is always the answer. It also does not mean Expedia, booking direct, or using a travel agent is wrong.
It means this specific trip had a specific best option.
And that is the point.
There Are Still Trade-Offs
The cheapest or best-value booking path is not always the easiest booking path.
If you work with a good travel agent — especially one booking through an agent portal — they may help with issues before, during, and after the trip.
More detail: When Service May Be Worth Paying More
A good travel agent may help with:
- Flight disruptions
- Schedule changes
- Re-bookings
- Questions before the trip
- Issues that come up along the way
For some people, that level of service is absolutely worth paying a little more for.
We completely respect that.
Loyalty to a long-time travel agent can matter, too. If someone has helped you well over the years and you trust them, there is value in that relationship.
But there is also value in knowing when a different option may save you hundreds of dollars or include benefits you would not otherwise receive.
That is the balance we want people to understand.
DIY vs. Done-For-You
There is no one right answer.
If you are comfortable being a bit hands-on, an option like Costco Travel can be a great fit if you are a member. If you would rather have someone fully in your corner handling the details, paying more can make complete sense.
More detail: Questions to Ask Before Choosing How to Book
Neither approach is wrong.
The key is understanding what you are choosing.
- Are you paying more for convenience?
- Are you saving money but taking on more responsibility?
- Are you giving up benefits by booking one way instead of another?
- Are you choosing a booking path because it is actually better — or because it was simply the first one presented?
Those are the questions that matter.
What We Are Building
We are intentionally trying to build something different.
Our goal is not to steer you toward a booking path because it pays us the most. It is to present the real choices, explain the trade-offs, and let you decide what makes the most sense.
More detail: What That May Look Like in Real Life
That might look like paying a little more so we handle the details from start to finish.
It might look like taking our suggestions and booking something yourself.
It might look like using points, booking direct, using a portal, using Costco Travel, working with another travel agent, or choosing the option that creates the least stress.
The “best” answer depends on the trip.
But the promise is simple:
We will recommend what we believe is best for you, even when there is nothing in it for us.
Why This Matters
Right now, we are offering this guidance at no cost.
Long-term, we do expect to charge a service fee that reflects our time. Our goal would be to offset that fee by any commissions we might earn, when that makes sense and when it is available.
More detail: Why Trust Matters More Than Commission
But the core approach will not change.
We do not want people wondering whether we recommended something because it was the best fit — or because it paid us.
We want to be clear about the options.
We want to explain the trade-offs.
And we want people to feel confident that the recommendation is based on their trip, not our commission.
Because trust is worth more than a commission — every time.
Final Thoughts
Whether you are comparing Costco Travel, booking direct, using a travel portal, working with a travel agent, or trying to decide if a package is actually a good deal, we can help you look at the full picture.
If you want help evaluating your options, our Trip Planning service is designed for exactly this kind of decision.
