What NCL Cruisers Said Keeps Them Coming Back

We started cruising last year after a friend and co-worker recommended we try the Norwegian Bliss for Alaska.

That was supposed to be our “let’s see if we even like cruising” trip.

Apparently, we liked it.

Since that first Bliss cruise last May, we’ve sailed the Bliss two more times, plus the Escape and the Dawn. We still say we want to branch out and try other cruise lines, and we do have a Northern Europe/Norway cruise booked on Princess next year.

But before that, we have two more Norwegian cruises coming up: Alaska on the Encore in August and Canada/New England on the Breakaway in September.

Somewhere along the way, Norwegian just started to fit us.

So we asked other NCL cruisers a simple question:

What is it about Norwegian that keeps bringing you back?

The answers were not all identical, but the themes were very consistent.

Not everyone loves NCL. A few people shared negative experiences, and several people said they enjoy other cruise lines too. But among the people who keep choosing Norwegian again and again, the same ideas kept showing up: freestyle dining, casual dress, solo cruising, good value, friendly crew, loyalty perks, entertainment, itineraries, and the feeling that NCL lets people vacation in a way that feels comfortable to them.

Freestyle Dining Was the Biggest Theme

If there was one answer that came up over and over again, it was freestyle dining.

More detail: Cruisers do not want vacation dinner to feel like an appointment.

A lot of NCL cruisers said they do not want to be locked into the same dining time, same table, and same routine every night. For many people, that flexibility is one of the biggest reasons they keep coming back.

Several cruisers compared NCL to experiences they had on other lines, especially when assigned dining was involved. Some people like having the same server every night. Some enjoy meeting tablemates. Some like the structure.

But for many NCL fans, the appeal is simple:

  • They want to eat when they want.
  • They want to decide each day based on the schedule.
  • They want dinner to fit around the port, the show, their mood, or how tired they are.

That is probably one of the biggest reasons Norwegian fits us too.

We like being able to plan dinner around entertainment, port days, or just whatever the day turns into. On vacation, that flexibility matters.

Casual Dress Is a Big Part of the Appeal

The second theme that came up constantly was the casual atmosphere.

More detail: A lot of repeat NCL cruisers are not formal night people.

A lot of cruisers said some version of this:

We are not formal night people.

They like being able to dress nicely if they want to, but they do not want to feel like they have to pack formalwear or dress up every night. One person talked about liking a cotton sundress and sandals. Another said they simply hate dressing up and like having a casual day they get to choose.

That casual feeling seems to be a big part of NCL’s identity for many repeat cruisers.

It is not that people want the ship to feel sloppy. Most still want good service, nice meals, clean ships, good entertainment, and a vacation that feels special.

They just do not want the formality.

That is a good distinction.

For some travelers, formal nights are part of the fun. For others, they feel like one more thing to plan around. NCL seems to work well for the second group.

Solo Cruisers Had a Lot to Say

One of the strongest themes in the comments was how much solo cruisers appreciate Norwegian.

More detail: NCL’s solo program seems to create a lot of loyalty.

Several people called NCL’s solo program one of the best in the industry. Others mentioned solo cabins, solo lounges, solo meetups, group dinners, and the comfort of being able to travel alone while still having opportunities to meet people.

That stood out because solo cruising is a very different travel experience.

For a couple, freestyle dining and casual dress may simply be convenient. For a solo traveler, the right cruise line can affect the entire feel of the trip.

People mentioned feeling safe, comfortable, familiar with the ships, and able to connect with other solo travelers. One cruiser talked about meeting other solo travelers and now traveling together as solos. Another said NCL works well because they can travel alone and still feel like everything is convenient and welcoming.

That is a real strength.

Not every cruise line handles solo travelers the same way, and the comments made it clear that NCL has built a lot of loyalty from people who cruise by themselves.

Free at Sea Still Matters to People

The Free at Sea package came up a lot too.

More detail: For many cruisers, the value is not just the math — it is the feel of the trip.

Some people specifically mentioned the drink package. Others talked about the overall feeling of getting more included or having a more all-inclusive feel without worrying about a big bill at the end.

That does not mean Free at Sea is truly free. We have written before about how the package works, including the gratuities and the math behind whether it makes sense.

But perception matters.

For many cruisers, especially those who enjoy drinks, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, or excursion credits, Free at Sea helps the trip feel easier. One person said they liked not having to worry about a large final bill for dining and drinks. Another called Free at Sea and Free at Sea Plus a huge selling point.

That is very similar to how we look at it.

It is not always about whether every single perk is maximized perfectly. Sometimes the value is in knowing what your trip is likely to cost before you go.

The Crew Came Up Again and Again

Another repeated theme was the crew.

More detail: The ship matters, but the crew can make people feel like they are coming back home.

Several people said the staff feels friendly, helpful, consistent, and welcoming. One person said the crew becomes like family. Another mentioned being remembered by name, including a crew member who knew their drink order.

That kind of thing makes a difference.

Cruises are interesting because the ship itself gets a lot of attention. People talk about the restaurants, bars, shows, pools, lounges, cabins, and ports.

But the crew can make or break the experience.

When people say they keep coming back to a cruise line because it feels familiar, part of that familiarity is the way they are treated onboard. Several commenters talked about feeling appreciated, recognized, or just taken care of.

That is something we have noticed too. We have been treated very well on NCL, and when you start recognizing crew members from past sailings, it makes the ship feel a little more like a place you are returning to instead of starting over completely.

Loyalty Perks Keep People in the NCL World

The Latitudes loyalty program also came up quite a bit.

More detail: Once people start earning status, it gives them another reason to return.

Some cruisers mentioned moving up through the levels quickly, especially when double-point offers are involved. Others talked about Platinum, Sapphire, or higher-tier perks making the experience better over time.

This is one of those things that can quietly influence future decisions.

Once you start earning status with a cruise line, there is a natural pull to keep building on it. More perks can make future cruises feel like a better value, especially if they include things like specialty dining, laundry, discounts, priority benefits, or other extras.

That does not mean loyalty should override itinerary, price, or fit.

But it is easy to see why it matters.

If someone already likes NCL and they are starting to earn meaningful perks, choosing Norwegian again can feel like the natural next step.

Itineraries Still Matter

Even among loyal NCL cruisers, many people said itinerary comes first.

More detail: Favorite cruise line or not, the right route can still decide the trip.

A few commenters said they are not completely loyal to one cruise line and will choose based on where the ship is going. Others said NCL offers good itineraries, interesting ports, or ports that fit their travel style.

Alaska came up a lot, especially the Bliss and Encore. People also mentioned Canada/New England, Hawaii on Pride of America, Mediterranean cruises, Northern Europe, Panama Canal, Bermuda, and other routes.

Some people said they would choose another line if the itinerary was better or if NCL did not go where they wanted to go.

That feels like a healthy way to look at cruising.

A cruise line can be your favorite and still not be the right choice for every trip.

We are seeing that ourselves. We keep coming back to NCL, but our Northern Europe/Norway cruise is booked on Princess because the itinerary and price made sense.

That does not mean we are done with NCL.

It just means the right cruise is a mix of ship, itinerary, timing, price, and travel style.

Ship Class and Layout Matter More Than People Realize

Another interesting theme was how specific some cruisers were about ship classes and layouts.

More detail: People may love NCL, but they do not always love every NCL ship for the same reason.

People mentioned loving the Bliss, Encore, Joy, Breakaway, Escape, Prima, Viva, Aqua, Dawn, Jewel, and others. But they did not always love them for the same reasons.

Some people like the bigger ships because they have more entertainment, lounges, specialty dining, and outdoor spaces.

Others prefer smaller ships because they feel calmer, easier, or more peaceful.

Several people specifically mentioned things like:

  • Observation Lounge on the Bliss and other Breakaway Plus ships
  • The Waterfront or Deck 8 outdoor areas
  • Spice H2O
  • The Great Outdoors and Spinnaker Lounge on Jewel-class ships
  • The Haven
  • Thermal suites
  • Solo lounges
  • Specialty dining options
  • Entertainment venues and live music

That is a good reminder that “NCL” is not one single experience.

The ship matters. The itinerary matters. The passenger mix matters. The time of year matters.

The same person may love one NCL ship and feel less excited about another. That does not necessarily mean they love or dislike the entire cruise line.

Entertainment Was a Big Differentiator

Entertainment came up several times, especially from cruisers comparing NCL to other lines.

More detail: For a lot of cruisers, NCL feels relaxed without feeling boring.

A few people felt other lines had better food or service in some areas, but NCL’s entertainment stood out. People mentioned shows, live music, piano bars, comedy, house bands, and the overall amount of entertainment available.

That matches our experience.

We are not people who need to schedule every minute of the cruise, but we do enjoy having options. On the Bliss, we loved how much there was to do at night, especially with live music and shows.

For some cruisers, that becomes one of the reasons NCL feels like a good fit.

It is relaxed, but not boring.

You can do a lot, or you can do almost nothing.

That combination seems to be a big part of the appeal.

Not Everyone Agreed — and That Matters Too

The comments were mostly positive, but not every response was glowing.

More detail: No cruise line is the right fit for everyone.

A few people said NCL was not for them. Some preferred Royal Caribbean, MSC, Celebrity, Princess, Viking, Holland America, Oceania, or smaller luxury lines. A couple of people shared very negative experiences, including frustration over service, weather-related travel disruptions, or medical and customer service issues.

That is worth including because no cruise line is perfect.

Some people want bigger ships and more activities. Some want smaller ships and better food. Some want a more upscale or formal experience. Some want a quieter ship. Some want more structure. Some want fewer kids. Some want more nightlife. Some want the absolute best itinerary, regardless of cruise line.

That is why cruise advice is tricky. The “best” cruise line depends so much on the person taking the trip.

For the right traveler, NCL can feel easy, casual, flexible, and fun.

For the wrong traveler, those same qualities may not be enough.

The Real Answer: NCL Fits a Certain Travel Style

After reading through the comments, the biggest takeaway was not one specific perk.

More detail: The common thread was fit.

People kept saying things like:

  • It fits us.
  • It fits our vibe.
  • It is easy.
  • It is relaxed.
  • It feels comfortable.
  • We know what we are getting.

That may be the real reason people keep coming back to Norwegian.

Not because it is perfect.

Not because every ship is the same.

Not because every meal, show, cabin, or port day will be flawless.

But because for a lot of cruisers, NCL removes some of the parts of cruising they do not want:

  • No assigned dining time.
  • No required formal nights.
  • No feeling like you have to follow the same routine every day.
  • No one-size-fits-all vacation style.

For us, that is probably why Norwegian clicked so quickly.

We like having a plan, but we also like being able to change it.

We like good value, but we do not need luxury for luxury’s sake.

We like casual, comfortable travel.

We like ships with places to walk, sit, listen to music, have a drink, see a show, and enjoy the day without feeling over-scheduled.

And for now, NCL keeps giving us that.

Final Thoughts

The Facebook responses made one thing very clear:

NCL cruisers are loyal for a reason.

Some love the solo program. Some love Free at Sea. Some love the crew. Some love the entertainment. Some love the itineraries. Some love the loyalty perks.

But the common thread is that Norwegian feels easy.

For many cruisers, that is the whole point of vacation.

You get onboard, settle in, eat when you want, dress how you want, find the places you enjoy, and build the cruise around your own rhythm.

That does not mean NCL is the right cruise line for everyone.

But for the people who love it, the reason is pretty simple:

It fits.

And sometimes, once you find the cruise line that fits, it is hard not to keep coming back.
